North India Hill Stations:-

1.       Almora

 

Almora is a town in the shape of a horse shoe. It is on a 5 km long mountain range. It has its own historical, cultural and political importance. Once upon a time, it was the capital of Kumau. It was set up by King Balo Kalyan Chand in 1563.The descendents from the Kyutar dynasty and the Chand dynasty ruled here in the old times. The forts, other historical monuments, courts and governmental offices are still present today. The two rivers, Kaushik (Koshi) and Shalmali (Suyal) flow near the town. The snow capped peaks of the Himalayas look like a long train of ice and snow from here.

By Road: Almora is well connected with all-important cities of India by road.

By Air: The nearest airport is a Pant Nagar (Nainital). During the summer regular flights are operational.

By Rail: The nearest raiway station near Almora is Kathgodam.

2.      Bhimtal

Bhim Tal has an island, to the north-east side, which is an exquisite gem in the middle of the lake. It is situated within the range of temple bells, which have been chiming for the last 300 years in the 17th century edifice, beneath the shadow of the towering mountain rushing precipitously down to the emerald green lake. The island is only 91.4 metres from the shore.

Bhimtal, situated at a distance of 22kms from Nainital, is named after one of the Pandav brothers called Bhim. The largest lake in the district of Nainital, Bhim Tal is 1701 metres by 265 metres, 265 metres longer than Naini Lake. The lake known for its magnificent majesty is situated at an altitude of 1371.6 metres above sea level.


Rail: - Nearest railhead is Kathgodam, 23 kms.

Road: - 23 kms from Kathgodam, 22 kms. from Nainital and 11 kms from Bhowali. Regular bus service links Bhimtal with Kathgodam. Private taxies are available from Nainital, Bhowali & Haldwani.

 

3.       Badrinath

The holy Dhama temple of Badrinath, is in the state of Uttaranchal of the Himalaya mountains. The temple's elevation is 10,248 feet (3050 metres).Badrinath Temple is the abode of Lord Vishnu. It is situated at an altitude of 3130 m at the banks of Alaknanda. In the backdrop, is the Neelkanth mountain peak situated between the twin peaks of Nar and Narayan. The name is derived from wild berries called Badri. Adi Shankarcharya established the idol of Vishnu in the temple. Near the temple is a hot water sulphur spring, Tapt Kund.

Situated on the river bank of the river Alakananda Badrinath is sandwiched within the two mountain ranges of Nar and Narayan, with the Neelkanth peak on the background. This gorgeous and rare beautiful sight is itself an enchantment for tourists and is called the "Garhwal Queen." The nearest cities are Rishikesh (300 km), Mussoorie and Dehradun. The night temperatures falls to as low as 10.

4.       Chamba

Chamba was founded by Raja Varman who named the town after his daughter Champavati.The small town of Chamba is located amidst the Shivalik ranges and is famous for its temples. The architecture of the temples of Chamba reflects the unmatched architectural superiority of the Indian sculptures.Chamba has a grassy promenade which is the focus for the Sui Mata and Minjar festivals. Located at an altitude of 926m.Chamba is 56 km from Dalhousie via Khajjiar.

5.       Chail

Chail hill station of Himachal Pradesh acts as a honeymooner’s paradise. Chail lies at a height of 2,250 metres above the sea level. Bhupinder Singh, Maharaja of Patiala, when was facing an exiled from Shimla, he decided to create his own summer capital, which was Chail.

 Nature is at her exuberant best and words like pollution and deforestation is no where in mind of the citizens of Chail.The unmatched natural greenary with soundless calm beauty adds to the immortal memories of the tourists.

Chail was the summer capital of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. In 1891, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala incurred the wrath of Lord Kitchener and was send in exile. He was banned to enter into the summer capital of the British Raj, Shimla. Thus, to avenge the dishonour Maharaja Bhupinder Singh decided to build a better summer capital than Shimla. The little village of Chail was perfect. It lay surrounded by magnificent deodar forests, Shimla was in direct vision and most important, the hill of Chail at 2226 m was somewhat higher than British-controlled Shimla. The architecturally magnificient palace of Maharaja is now used as a tourist hotel.

Chail is about 45 km from Shimla and around 95 km from Kalka. It is 390 km from the Indian capital (Delhi). From Kandaghat, it is an about 90 mins journey by road to Chail. To reach Kandaghat one has to take Kalka Shimla rail route. Due to the gorgious valley forest beauty the best enjoyable travel should be in a toy train. It takes five hours from Kalka to get to Kandaghat.Thickly forested tracks, hairpin bends and long tunnels add to the unforgetable memories of the tourists.

By air: The nearest airports are at Chandigarh (120 km), and Simla (63 km).
By road: From Simla via Kufri the distance is 45 km and via Kandaghat the distance is 61 km. Kalka is 86 km away. Regular buses for Chail leave from Simla, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

6.       Chikaldhara Hills

Chikhaldara is located in Amaravati district of Vidarbha region. The only hill station in the Vidarbha region offers you an abundance of wildlife, viewpoints, lakes and waterfalls. It is named after "Keechaka". This is the place where Bheema killed villainous Keechaka and threw him into the valley. It thus came to be known as "Keechakadara" - "Chikhaldara" is its corruption.

Chikhaldara is the sole hill resort in the Vidarbha region, situated at an altitude of 1,118 m and has the added distinction of being the only coffee-growing area in Maharashtra. Chikhaldara is full of deep valleys, and these valleys are full of velvet mist and majestic trees. All this makes it a very popular summer retreat. With abundance of natural scenery, exciting wildlife, breathtaking waterfalls and a placid lake, the beauty of Chikhaldara is overwhelming. The climate is always breezy and walking on the clouds often becomes a reality.

7.       Dalhousie

Dalhousie is the gateway to ancient Chamba Hill State.Dalhousie is in Chamba District of the Himachel Pradesh.The hill station of Dalhousie is full of charm and holds lingering echoes It covers an area of about 14 sq. km and is built on five hills - Kathlog, Potreyn, Tehra, Bakrota and Balun.

  
Dalhousie has charming architecture, including beautiful churches. Its location presents panoramic views of the plains - and like a long silverline, the river Ravi twists and turns below Dalhousie.Dalhousie is built by the British as per their own style as they wanted to establish a sanatorium for Europeans on the outer slopes of the Dhauladhar range. The then Maharaja of Chamba was offered handsome amout for this place.The amout Rs 2300 was decided to be paid as a compensation to the Chamba state for the transfer of this place and its nearby places like Bakrota,Tehra,Kathlog etc... to the Government of India.Sir Donald McLeod recommended the British to name, the new sanatorium as Dalhousie, after Lord Dalhousie, the first British Governor General of India in the year 1854. Thus, this beautiful hill station came into being covering an area of 14 sq kms.

8.       Dhanaulti

Unspoilt, unexplored and in stark contrast to the urban jungle that Mussoorie has become, Dhanolti is as close to nature as can be. Rows of Deodars, vast green meadows and a gentle cool breeze greets you about 30 km from Mussoorie beyond Landour. It can be a day trip or better still overnite sojourn at this beautiful country side. Treks, pony rides along fruit orchards and water streams appearing from nowhere can keep you busy as there is no mall for shopping or videogames. Hotels are few but have all the facilities including hot water and cable TV for those who care. Dhanaullti also provides excellent  views of the snow capped Himalayan ranges.You can go directly to Dhanulti by taking a right turn about 8 km before reaching Mussoorie and then doing another 30 km or so on a 'not so bad' road.

9.       Dharamsala

The great rock wall of Dhaula Dhar where wander those legendary shephardesses, the Gaddi maidens, immediately above Dharamsala rises one of the main spurs of the Himalayas, the dark, pine-covered mountain-side reaching out towards the upper peaks that soar into the regions of eternal snow. Dharamsala's altitude varies between 1,250 metres (4,400 ft) and 2,000 metres (6,560 ft).

  
The snow line, here, is perhaps more easily accessible than at any other hill resort and it is quite possible to trek upto it after an early morning's start, the glittering rays of the sun fall upon the glossy snow and cast their reflections back in the valley in all the seven colours of the rainbow, beckowning people on. The scene shifts as one approaches Dharamsala, the plains below wear a veil of blue, while the Dhaula Dhar, spur on which Dharamsala stands rises dark and pine covered. Divided into upper and lower towns with a difference of some metres (1,500 ft) between them against a background of snow-capped mountains, forests of giant conifers meet carefully cultivated tea gardens at the beautiful resort of Dharamsala which stands on the spur of the Dhauladhar range.

By Air :
Dharamsala can be approached by air from Delhi and the nearest Airport is at Gaggla, just 13-km away from the town.
By Rail
Pathankot is 85-km and is the nearest railhead for Dharamsala. Trains from all over the country make a stop over at Pathankot and from here it is a three-hour journey to Dharamsala.
By Road
From Manali too bus services are available to this place. One can drive from Delhi via Chandigarh, Kiratpur, Bilaspur and it's an 8-hours journey. From Delhi and Shimla, luxury buses ply to Dharamsala.

 

10.   Gongotri

It is the man's requirement to worship the Gods or tos fulfill his desire for adventure, Gangotri is an ideal location. Gangotri, the origin of the sacred river Ganges, attracts tourists in huge numbers every season. To discover the daunting rivers and attempts to reveal the mysteries of the natural world are rare sights here. Along with the thrill of exploring nature, what one experiences here is the aura that India is famous for.

Located in the hills, Gangotri is at an altitude of 3048 meters above sea level. Gangotri is situated in the northern part of the state of Uttarakhand and is very near the Indo-Tibetan border. It is approximately 300 km from Dehradun, 250 km from Rishikesh and 105 km from Uttarkashi. The summers are cool and winters are very cold, with rains in the months of May and June. For the tourists, the gates of the temple are open only in the months of May to November.

 

11.   Gulmarg

Gulmarg legendary beauty, prime location and proximity to Srinagar naturally make it one of the premier hill resorts in the country. Originally called ‘Gaurimarg’ by shepherds, its present name was given in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah, who was inspired by the sight of its grassy slopes emblazoned with wild flowers. Gulmarg was a favourite haunt of Emperor Jehangir who once collected 21 different varieties of flowers from here. Today Gulmarg is not merely a mountain resort of exceptional beauty it also has the highest green golf course in the world, at an altitude of 2,650 m, and is the country's premier ski resort in the winter.

Gulmarg is 56 kms from Srinagar. J&K SRTC operates regular deluxe and ordinary bus services from Srinagar. In winter, the buses operate up to Tangmarg (11 kms from Gulmarg), the remaining distance being covered with smaller vehicles. Tourist taxis also operate between Srinagar and Gulmarg.v

 

12.   Kangra

This ancient town of Kangra lies overlooking the gushing torrents of the Banganga River, a tributary of the Beas rising from the southern slopes of the milky Dhauladhars. But saying simply that Kangra is an ancient town is not enough; it has the distinction of being the site of the oldest recorded war in human history. It even finds a mention in Alexander’s (around 326 BC) war records. The great Indian epic Mahabharata cites Kangra as Trigarta. Today Kangra is also known as Bhawan or Nagarkot. Bhawan because of the Bajreshwari Devi Temple, and Nagarkot because of the fort Nagarkot.

Kangra is located in the western part of the state of Himachal Pradesh, in the northern region of India. It is 18 km south of Dharamsala.

HOW TO REACH
  
Kangra does not have an airport. It has two railway stations: Kangra station, which is 3 km south of the town, and the Kangra Mandir station, 3 km east of the town. Indian Railways has introduced the Kangra Queen between Pathankot and Palampur. This luxury train running on narrow gauge covers a distance of 128 km in 4½ hours with two halts. Jawalamukhi and Kangra. The entire route provides panoramic view of the snow-capped Dhauladhar range. The Kangra bus stand is located north of the Bazaar, along the Dharamsala Road. Bus service from Kangra to Dharamsala (45 minutes) and Palampur is frequent.v

13.   Kasauli

Kasauli situated at a height of 1927mt., from sea level, is a small town with a strong Colonial influence. Kasauli provide a charming view of Chandigarh, Shimla and the himalayas covered with snow. This place is not so popular with the tourists, It's main attraction lies in it's overall cleanliness, and it's accessibility. Only 15 km from Dharampur, 37 km from Kalka and 65 km from Chandigarh. The narrow winding roads meander their way up and down the hill side and offer some magnificent sights.

By Air : The airport Shimla is at Jubbarhati. Taxis / buses are available from here.
Direct flghts from Delhi are available on alternate days.From Shimla it is 77km
By Rail : The nearest rail head is at Kalka. From here local buses and taxies are available
By Road : From Chandigarh or Delhi follow the Shimla highway upto Dharampur 23 km from
Kalka. From Dharmpur link road goes to Kasauli leaving the Shimla highyway.

14.   Kausani

There are very few places in the Himalayas which can compare with the beauty of Kaushani.As the entire Kumaon Hills have been known for their idyllic beauty with the huge mountains silhouetted against the sky.Kausani was originally called Valna. Kausani offers the magic of the deep pine forests and the majestic mountains. Kausani the birthplace of the famed poet Sumitra Nandan Pant is often referred to as the 'Switzerland of India. Situated among mountains and trees, the peaks Trishul and Nanda Devi are clearly visible from here. In 1929, Mahatma Gandhi spent 12 days here and brought his thoughts out in his book called Anasakti Yoga. The place where he stayed is called the Anasakti Ashram. This Ashram was earlier the guest house in a tea estate.

  
Kausani is ideal to visit with the family. Because of its beauty, tourists come here all through the year. From morning to evening, from valleys to peaks, thousands of different colours can be seen here.

By Rail: The railway station at Kathgodam is the nearest railhead to Kausani at a distance of 142 km and caters to the rail transport to Kausani

15.   Khajjiar

Khajjiar, located at an altitude of 1960 m, is often called the Switzerland of India, with its rolling meadows, majestic deodars, bubbly streams, and the sheer opulence of its natural beauty. The snow - line appears above its lush woods, and at the very centre of this divine glade, is a lake fed by countless streams that criss - cross the area.

Khajjiar's is located between Dalhousie and Chamba,It is a major landmark is a 12th century, golden - domed temple dedicated to Khajjinag, which houses huge, lifesize wooden images of the 5 Pandava brothers.

Khajjiar is located in the northwestern part of the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is perched at an altitude of 1951 m above sea level. Khajjiar is 22 km from Dalhousie and 24 km from Chamba.

 

16.   Kuffri

The Hill Station Kufri is just 16 kms from Shimla, at the height of 2,633 mts, famous for its trekking and hiking trails. It is also known for nature parks and picnic spots. It also has a Potato Research Station. It is famous for winter sports. This place is also full of lush green hills. The region around Shimla including Kufri was once a part of the Kingdom of Nepal.

This region remained obscure from the rest of the world until the British discovered it in 1819. The British made Shimla their summer capital in 1864 and it remained so until 1939. As Shimla gained importance, Kufri also began to be recognized as an important place to visit. An annual winter sports festival is organized every year in the month of February in Kufri, when skiing enthusiasts and adventure seekers participate in this festival. There are plans to suspend tourist operations.It is famous for it's ski slopes, and panoramic views where deep valleys and forests rise towards the lofty Himalayas. Through thick cedar woods one can walk upto the Mahasu Peak, or visit the little zoo. At Kufri, National Snow Statue Competition is held in the month of January. From Kufri, a fascinating drive leads on to Chail. 6 kms from Kufri, along the Hindustan-Tibet road, is Fagu. It presents breathtaking scenery.

 

17.   Kullu

The most charming and beautiful Kullu valley spreads out its charm on either side of river Beas.Kullu was once known as Kulanthpitha, which means the end of the habitable world. Beyond rose the forbidding heights of the Greater Himalayas, and by the banks of the shining river Beas, lay the fabled 'Silver Valley'. The valley runs north to south of Beas river and is 80 kms. long and about 2kms wide.

 This town is famous for its temples and the annual Dussehra festival, both of which attract thousands of tourists.the town of Kullu has long been a centre of faith. In the 17th century, Raja Jagat Singh installed here an idol of Lord Raghunathji, which he brought from Ayodhya. As a mark of his penance, he placed the idol on his throne and it became the presiding deity of the valley.

Kullu is located in the central part of the state of Himachal Pradesh ,India. It is located at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level at the confluence of Beas and Sarvari rivers. It is 240 km north of Shimla.

 

18.   Ladakh

Ladakh is a part of Jammu and Kashmir State in north of The Prayer wheel India consisting of two districts Leh and Kargil. Leh with an area of 45110 Sq Kms. makes it largest district in the country in terms of area. It lies between 32 to 36 degree North latitude and 75 degree to 80 degree East longitude. The district is bounded by Pakistan occupied Kashmir in the West and China in the north and eastern part and Lahul Spiti of Himachal Pardesh in South East. Ladakh situated distance of 434 Kms. from Srinagar and 474 Kms from Manali. Leh district comprises of Leh town and 112 inhabited villages and one un-inhabited village. The total population of Leh district is 1.17 lacs. Ladakh is bounded by world's two mightiest mountain ranges the great Himalayan and the Karakoram, It lies athwart two others The Ladakh and the Zangskar range.

19.   Monali

Manali is an important hill station of northern India and is the destination of thousands of tourists every year.Manali derived its name from Manavalaya meaning the abode of Manu or "Home of Manu" and here, the temples are treated as pilgrimages. Its cool atmosphere provides a perfect haven for the ones afflicted by the hot Indian summers. Manali is also famous for adventure sports like skiing, hiking, mountaineering, para gliding, rafting, trekking, kayaking, and mountain biking.

Manali is situated in the central parts of Himachal Pradesh, Manali is 32 km from Kullu valley, 280 km north of the state capital Shimla and 108 km from Mandi. Manali is located at an altitude of 2050 meters above sea level and is spread along the banks of the river Beas.

20.   Mount Abu

Mount Abu is a picturesque hill-station which green oasis in the barren desertscape thats Rajasthan. Situated at the southern tip of the Aravali range the hill retreat owes its cool climate to its rich flora covering the entire hillside that includes coniferous trees and flowering shrubs. The road leading to Mount Abu is a curved one characterized by arid region dotted with huge rocks in weird shapes and high velocity winds. This is also the highest point between the Nilgiris in the south and the Himalayan range up north.

 The only hill station in Rajasthan, Mount Abu is more than just a summer retreat. Its stunning array of exquisite Dilwara Jain Temples, dating back 11th- 13th centuries, make it a popular pilgrimage centre. ‘Abu’ according to a legend.stands for the son of Himalayan, deriving its name from Arbuada,the powerful serpent who rescued Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva, from a chasm.

By Rail: There are direct trains to Abu Road Station (27 km away from Mount Abu) from Delhi, Jodhpur and Agra. A fast train takes four hours between Ahmedabad in Gujarat and Abu Road.
By Road: Regular buses connect Abu Road to Mount Abu. The journey takes about an hour. Taxis and jeeps are also available to take you to Mount Abu. Direct buses also connect Mount Abu with Udaipur and Ahmedabad.

21.   Mukteswar

Mukteshwar is situated in Uttarakhand which is 330 kms. from New Delhi, Mukteshwar itself was 'put on the map' by the establishment of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in 1898, which owns much of the land around the little town, including acres of dense virgin forest, home to langur and rhesus monkeys, deer, a host of bird species and where - if you're lucky, and patient enough - you may even catch a glimpse of a mountain leopard, Himalayan black bear or wild boar.

22.   Mussoorie

Mussoorie, Popularly known as the Queen of Hills, this charming hill station, 34 kms from Dehradun is situated at an altitude of 2003 mts in the Garhwal hills. above sea-level. Mussoorie is one the beautiful hill stations in India and the most frequently visited. It provides excellent respite to people who want relief from the hot sultry conditions of the plains, especially since it is close enough to the capital to make just weekend trip. Also, major Hindu pilgrimage sites like Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Haridwar, Rishikesh are not far from this place.

In 1820, Captain Young of the British army was influenced by the beauty of this place and made it his residence. The name, Mussoorie is derived from plants of 'Mussoorie' which were found in abundance here. After its discovery, this hill station gradually developed as a centre of education, business, tourism and beauty.

 

23.   Nainital

Nainital , Uttaranchal is famous not just for its green hills or many lakes. It is also famous for it's many legends and stories. Hundreds of ancient temples and peaks with astounding views of the mountains in the background add to Nainital's magical appeal.The history of this dainty town sails over the surface of the Naini Lake, where oarsmen narrate the stories of the rishis who brought the waters of the sacred Mansarovar River to formSuffocating at times with thousands of tourists, Nainital is also home to Sherwood, one of India's most prestigious schools.

Nainital is 34 Km from Kathgodam, the gateway of Kumaon and the terminus of North Eastern Railway. It is 304 km from Delhi, capital of India, and 388 km from Lucknow the State capital. According to the District Gazetteer Nainital is situated at 29 degree 24' north latitude and 79 degree 28' east longitude, in a valley of the Gagar range running east and west, which is bounded on the north by the peak of China, which rises to a height of 8.568 feet, continued by the Alma peak (presently known as Snow-View) and the Sher-Ka-Danda to the eastern extremity, where the ridge descends almost to the level of the lake. On the west the rugged hill of Deopatha rises to a height of 7,987 feet, and on the south Ayarpatha attains an elevation of 7,461 feet diminishing gradually towards the east.

24.   Pachmarchi

Madhya Pradesh's serene hill station, which happens to be its only one, stands at an altitude of 1067 metres. It is a large plateau, ringed by the lofty hills of the Satpura range. The landscape is characterised by rugged hills, forests and deep ravines. Known as the verdant jewel of the hills, the all - pervading greenery of the region is what strikes the observer. Various hues of green greet the eye - tranquil emerald pools, the green shades that embrace the hills, and the thick, impenetrable forest cover that dominates the region.One of its main attractions, is the splendid view it offers at dusk, when the red sandstone scarp takes on the colour of the sky, in various shades of purple and violet, as the glorious sun sets on Pachmarhi.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bhopal (195 km), which is connected by regular flights to Delhi, Gwalior, Indore and Bombay.

By Rail: Pipariya (47 km), on the Bombay–Howrah mainline via Allahabad, is the most convenient railhead. From Pipariya, there are frequent buses for Bhopal.

By Road: Pachmarhi is connected by regular bus services to Bhopal, Hoshangabad, Nagpur, Pipariya and Chindwara. M.P. Tourism as well private operators ply buses from Pachmarhi to the places listed above. Taxis can also be hired for this journey.

 

25.   Pahalgam

Ninety five km east of Srinagar at an altitude of 2,130 metres, Pahalgam is unspoiled by the ravages of progress. Away from the grind of daily life, Pahalgam is situated among the soaring mountains, glistening glaciers, gushing silvery streams of ice water and dense pine and cedar forests with soft whistling winds and revitalising air.

 Pahalgam is an ideal place for an adventure sports enthusiast. It offers wonderful treks, skiing, mountaineering and camping sites.

Pahalgam is located in the western part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is located at an altitude of 2130 m above sea level amidst the great Himalayan range. It is positioned beside the Liddar River, in the Liddar valley. Pahalgam is 95 km east of Srinagar. The weather in Pahalgam is alpine. Summers (April-June) are mild while winters (November-February) are cold. It experiences rains between July and September. It experiences heavy snowfall from December to February.

 

26.   Patnitop

Patnitop is One of the beautiful hill station Udhampur district Jammu and Kashmir.  It is located in the Shiwalik belt of the Himalayas, The River Chenab flows in close proximity to this location.
Patan Da Talab meaning "Pond of the Princess". In olden times a pond existed in the meadows and the kings princess often used to have her bath there. Part of the pond still exists near the youth hostel.The Britishers probably couldnt get the name correctly in their revenue records, and over the years it changed from "Patan Da Talab" to Patnitop.
 Patnitop is 112 Kms. 05 hrs. drive from Jammu, Patnitop offers beautiful picnic spots, peaceful walks and breathtaking views of the of the Chenab basin. In winter, there is an ambitious plan of Patnitop Development Authority to develop Patnitop, Kud, Sud-Mahadev, Mantalai circuit. The construction work of Mall Road at Kud is to be taken up in the near future. Trekking route from Kud to Patnitop-Sanasar has already been completed. The complete tourist circuit covers Jammu-Katra - Vaishno Devi ji, Kud-Sanasar, Patnitop-Gourikund, Sudmahadev, Mantali, extending upto Latti-Dhuna.

From Jammu, Katra, Udhampur. By car it takes about 3 and a half hours to reach Patnitop.

27.   Pithoragarg

28.   Ranikhet

Ranikhet is situated in the northern part of the state of Uttaranchal, in the northern region of India. It is situated in the Kumaon hills and is located on an altitude of 1824 m above sea level. Ranikhet is 59 km from Nainital and 50 km from Almora. The weather in Ranikhet is alpine. Summers (April-June) are mild and winters are cold (November-February). It experiences southwestern monsoon rains in July-September and experiences snowfall in winters.

 

29.   Renuka

The enchanting Renuka Lake, in Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh, at an altitude of 672 m above sea level Renuka is a sacred place that attracts tourists and pilgrims alike in Himachal Pradesh. Iis believed to be the embodiment of Renukaji, sage Jamadagini's wife and the mother of Parshurama - one of the ten `avatars' of Lord Vishnu. Acoording to a local legend, when the evil Sahasarjuna killed sage Jamadagini and attempted to abduct the latter's wife, Renuka, she threw herself into these waters. The gods brought her back to life, and consequently, this lake is considered to be her embodiment.

Shaped like a sleeping woman, the lake is the largest in the entire state. This tranquil water body is fed by underground springs, and the lush forest cover embracing it, houses many a species of flora and fauna. Apart from the haunting natural beauty of this area, Renukaji also offers boating and trekking facilities to the adventurous at heart.

30.   Shimla

Shimla, the summer capital of the British India, is situated at a height of 2,196 metres. While the British have left the echoes linger on. today, its well developed facilities, easy accessibility and many attractions make it one of India's most popular resorts. In the Himalyan lower ranges, it is surrounded by pine, cedar, oak and rhododendron forests.
Shimla is located towards the southern parts of the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Now It is the state capital and is at a distance of 343 km from Delhi, 260 km from Manali, and 119 km from Chandigarh. The temperature range is not very high and the maximum temperature rarely crosses 25°C during summers. Winters are cold due to the chilly winds from the upper Himalayas.

 

31.   Sonamarg

Welcome to a spectacular vacation in the meadow of Gold - Sonamarg. Sonamarg is one of the many famous hill resorts of Jammu and Kashmir. Sonamarg is a major gateway to Ladakh besides being a popular base for adventure sports. The spectacular valley of Sonamarg derives its name from a legend. As per the legend there is a well in the Sonamarg valley whose water can turn anything into gold. The other possible reason for the name Sonamarg could be its location on the route to Central Asia. Sonamarg is in fact wrapped in sycamore, alpine flowers, silver birch, fir and pine.

32.   Srinagar

Srinagar is the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and is the pride of the beautiful valley of Kashmir. Srinagar is famous for its lakes and the charming rows of houseboats floating on them. It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits

33.   Zanskar

About 20 kms south-east of Rangdum stands the Panzila axis, across which lies Zanskar, the most isolated of all the trans-Himalayan valleys. The Penzila pass (4,401m) is a picturesque tableland surrounded by snow-covered peaks.

As the Zanskar road winds down the steep slopes of Penzi-la to the head of the Stod valley, the majestic " Drang-Drung" glacier looms into full view. A long and winding river of ice and snow, "Drang-Drung" is perhaps the largest glacier in Ladakh, outside the Siachen formation. It is from the cliff-like snout of this extensive glacier that the Stod or Doda tributary of the Zanskar River rises.

4.       Coorg

Idukki, with altitudes up to 2500 ft above sea level, is one of the most beautiful districts of Kerala in India, Idukki is a district whose name is derived from the Malayalam word 'Idukku' which means a narrow gauge. Flanked by the Western Ghats in the East, the district has many narrow steep-sided valleys, giving credence to the name.The High ranges and wooded valleys are girded by three rivers - Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhyar - and their tributaries. The sacred river Pamba also originates from the mountain ranges here. While at Idukki you may visit the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 70 sq. km close to the Arched Dam. 9.       Kotagiri

The hill resort of Kotagiri is located in the famous Nilgiri Hills. Kotagiri is just 16 km away from Ooty.

10.   Munnar

One of the most popular hill stations in India, is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala.
Munnar, a quiet and restful resort at an altitude of 1524 meters 136 km off Cochin, lies snuggled in the green and serene Kannan Devan Hills.It is famous for its lush green surroundings, lakes, reservoirs, forests, and tea estates. 11.   Nandi Hills

The Nandi Hills or the hills of the Nandi have been named after the bull of Lord Shiva. The pleasant hill resort of Nandi Hills is also known as Nandigiri or Nandidurga amongst the locals. 12.   Ooty

Nestled in the brilliant green hills of the Nilgiris, Ooty or Udhagamandalam, is one of the favourite summer retreats of people in South India.Orchards of peaches and plums, terraced tea plantations, and eucalyptus, pine and wattle lining the landscape… a typical hill station in many ways.

Founded by the British in the early part of the 19th century, Ooty is home to many Britishers who have fallen in love with this hill station where they discovered a little bit of England. "…such beautiful English rain, such delicious English mud" is how Lord Lytton-Viceroy of India from 1876-1880 described Ooty to his wife! The British influence is visible in the handrolled cigars, chocolate and cheese one enjoys here. You also have the popular derby, and 'hunt' held annually. A hill station with a landscape perpetually enveloped in mist, Ooty's beauty has a timeless appeal.

It’s situated at an altitude of 2,268 m in the Nilgiri mountain ranges of Tamil Nadu.

  The Blue Mountain Express to Ooty is from Mettupalayam (47 km). Mettupalayam can be reached from Coimbatore by the Tea Garden Express.

 

13.   Peermade

Situated 915 m above sea level, Peermade is on the way to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. this pleasant hill station was once the summer retreat of the Maharajas of Travancore.Peermade is indeed a cool hill resort in Kerala. Here you will find sprawling tea, coffee, cardamom, rubber and eucalyptus plantations side by side with natural grasslands and pine forests.

Peermade lies 85 km east of Kottayam at an altitude of 915m above sea level.The weather is cool at Peermade all through the year owing to its altitude. The cool breezes make Peermade pleasant to be visited any time of the year.

Peerumedu is 85 kms east to Kottayam (travel time: 2 hours), on the way to Thekkady. There are frequent bus services from nearby cities of Kumily and Kottayam.

14.   Wayanand

Wayanad lies at an altitude varying from 700 - 2100 metres above the sea level. The district has the highest number of tribal settlements in Kerala. The hill ranges of Vythiri taluk (taluk is a sub division of a district), through which the road from Kozhikode ascends the Wayanad plateau over the mind boggling bends and ridges, are the highest locations of Wayanad district.

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary comprises two districts of Kerala i.e. in the north; it is a part of the Cannanore district while its southern part is located in the Calicut district. The park extends from the latitude 11°15' in the North to the longitude 76°30' in the East. There is a good road network that connects the sanctuary with the other important places in Kerala.

By Air: Kozhikode or Calicut at a distance of 110 km from Kalpetta is the nearest airport. Kozhikode is connected with Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, Bangalore, Chennai and some other places in India by regular flights. There are international flights to some Middle East cities from Kozhikode.

By Train: The nearest railway station from Wynad is again Kozhikode connected to almost all the major destinations in India by regular trains.

By Road: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation run frequent buses to the sanctuary from many places in both the states. The sanctuary is also connected to Mysore, Coorg, Bandipur, Nagarhole, and Ooty by regular buses.

15.   Yercaud

Yercaud Situated 1,515 metres high in the Shevaroy Hills, in the state of Tamil Nadu, Yercaud is quiet little hill station on the Eastern ghats is the only one of its kind in northern Tamil Nadu. While the rest of this region is generally dry, Yercaud presents a welcome contrast with its cool climate where temperature never rises above 30 º C and dip below 13 º C . It is also a less expensive place than either Udhagamandalam or Kodaikkanal the peaceful hill station of Yercaud nestles among coffee plantations and thickly forested slopes and is a good place for trekking and boating.
Some people believe that these hills were part of the ancient megalith-builders' domain which stretched from Cornwall through Brittany and Iberia to India. Clearly visitors have been streaming into Yercaud from well before recorded history

Road:Shiliguri is also well accessed by road ways and buses , minibuses jeeps run every thirty minutes or so from Siliguri to Darjeeling,Mirik,Gangtok Katmandu and other places.

 

2.       Kalimpanq

The first thing that strikes the traveler visiting Kalimpong is its quiet atmosphere. The peaceful ambience that pervades is heightened by the presence of monasteries and churches across the town.

It is situated 70km from gangtok & 180km from Darjeeling.

3.       Mirik

Mirik, the youngest hill station of India, is built around a 1.25 km long natural lake. The magical hill resort lies close to Siliguri in the West Bengal state of India. The peaceful and tranquil hill resort of Mirik boasts of several nature spots. The wild flowers, lovely lake and flourishing forests of Cryptomaria Japanica trees make Mirik appear as a tropical paradise. Mirik is surrounded by tea estates, orange orchards and cardamom plantations. There is a floating fountain in the middle of the lake and a quaint little footbridge connecting the flower garden on the eastern bank to the heavily forested ridge on the west. The lake is provided with boating facilities.

The place is only 49km from Darjeeling and 52km from Siliguri and can be reached from either place quite easily. This place is 1767 meters above the sea level and has a relatively thin population of 15,000 people. A relatively new tourist destination, Mirik came in the tourist map of Darjeeling District only in the 1970s. Mirik has all that it takes to attract tourists; it is surrounded by forests, flowers and is a very peaceful place, which attracts the tourists automatically.

By Air: The airport nearest to Mirik is in Bagdogra at a distance of 55 km

Road & Rail: The broad gauge railhead at New Jalpiaguri caters to the rail transportation to Mirik but is 60 km away from the hill resort. The excellent road network links Mirik with other important places like Bagdogra, Siliguri, Kurseong and Darjeeling

4.       Shillong

Scotland Of The East
Perched at an altitude of 1,496 m, this lesser known hill station is also called the "Scotland of the east". What exactly it has in common with Scotland maybe a matter of discussion but the majority of the population - the Khasis and the Jaintias - boats of a clan system that would any day outrival the Scottish clans!

As the car winds up from Guwahati in neighbouring Assam, 103-km away, the flat, dusty and grimy plains give way to rolling hills that rise slowly and sinuously. No abrupt, sudden assault on the senses. The charms of Shillong begin to work gradually but effectively. The road snakes up through lush green forests, seeping into the senses like heady wine.

By Rail : Shillong is connected by rail with the rest of the country through the railhead of Guwahati at a distance of 103 kilometers.

5.       Tawank

Tawang, perched at a height of over 10,000 ft, is world-renowned for its 400-year-old Buddhist Monastery, one of the biggest in India.
The Monastery was founded by the monk Mera Lama, a contemporary of the fifth Dalai Lama. The sixth Dalai Lama was born here. The Tawang Monastery has an interesting collection of Thangkas (Tibetan painting on cloth) and a large gilded statue of Sakyamuni (the historical Buddha) in the prayer hall. The Tawang Monastery, also known as the 'Galden Namgyal Lhatse', is beautifully situated on a spur about 2 km from the heart of the town. Before the establishment of the Monastery, Tawang was a centre of Tantric religion.

West India Hill Stations:-

1.       Khandala

Khandala, set at a height of 625 mt, located on the western slopes of the Sahyadri mountain range is a hill station in Maharashtra. Fascinating panoramic beauty adorns this place.Although it is comparatively small as compare to lonavala but it is equally blessed with natural beauty and bounty. Deep valley on one side and high hills on the other side divide Khandala and Lonavala. Luckily, modern industrialisation has not adversely affected Khandala. Whenever a tourist visits Lonavala he also wishes to visit Khandala. While travelling on Mumbai Bangalore National Highway, one has to cross the arduous Khopoli - Khandala Ghat. This is the famous Borghat. In a short distance of 8 Kms one has to climb a height of 369 meters. This is a difficult Ghat to climb. But once you reach here, you feel that this climb has been worth the trouble. Khandala is One place where you will fall in love at First Site. Lonavala and Khandala are full of tourist practically for the whole year. Main reasons for this is the fact that it is very close to Mumbai.

Khandala is located in the western part of the state of Maharashtra,India. It is set amongst the hills and valleys of the Sahyadri mountain range. It is situated 101 km southeast of Mumbai and 69 km from Pune. It is 5 km from Lonavala.

2.       Lonavala

Lonavala is a Hill station in Maharashtra. Also known as the jewel of the Sahyadri Mountains. It also serves as a starting point for tourists interested in visiting the famous, ancient Buddhist rock cut caves of Bhaja and Karla, which are located near this hill station.

Lonavala is located in the western part of the state of Maharashtra, in India. It is situated 106 km southeast of Mumbai at an altitude of 625 m above sea level.

Air: The nearest airport from Lonalvala is Pune, which is 64 km from Lonavala.

Train: Lonavala is on the main railway line between Mumbai and Pune , all express trains plying between the two cities stop here.

Road:The bus service between Lonavala and Pune is good (2 hours). However, the ride is rough and it takes 4 hours to reach Mumbai from Lonavala. Buses shuttle between Lonavala and Khandala (5 km from Lonavala; 15 minutes trip).

 

3.       Mahabaleswar

The highest hill station in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra , Mahabaleshwar is situated at 1372 meters around Lake Venna, Mahabaleshwar is Sanskrit for God of Great Power. It was summer capital of Governor of the old Bombay Presidency.Covering 10 sq km. There are 30 valley viewpoints with panoramic vistas scattered around the hill station and their access roads make for shady, pleasant walks and treks. The area has strong historical connections with Shivaji, the heroic Maratha warrior king.

The Britishers built various mansions, cottages and bungalows around the town, lending it a charming, sophistication. The place is popular with tourists, especially from Mumbai and Pune, wanting to take a break from the rush of rat race. the hill-station is very crowded during vacations like christmas & Diwali and in summers.

By Air: Pune is the nearest airport both for Mahabaleshwar (120 km and Panchgani (98 km)

By Rail: For Mahabaleshwar, the nearest railhead is Wathar (62 km) but Pune (120 km) is the convenient railhead.

For Panchgani, the nearest railhead is Wathar (45 km). Mumbai-Wathar via Pune (312 km). Pune-Wathar (120 km)

By Road: From Mumbai via Pune, Mahabaleshwar is 290 km and via Mahad it is 247 km. The State Transport buses ply from Mumbai and Pune to Mahabaleshwar. MTDC operates daily bus services except during the monsoon, between Mumbai-Mahabaleshwar-Mumbai. Also sightseeing tours for Mahabaleshwar and Mahabaleshwar-Pratapgad Fort.

  From Mumbai via Pune, Panchgani is 270 km and via Mahad 266 km, from Pune 98 kilometers and from Mahabaleshwar 19 km. The State Road Transport buses ply from Satara, Pune, Wai, Mahabaleshwar and Mahad. MTDC runs a regular bus service between Mumbai and Panchgani.

 

4.       Matheran

Matheran has 38 points at which can get a glimpse of nature's beauty. However to cover most of these points requires atleat one night stay in Matheran. Point seeing in Matheran is quiet easy due to the presence of sign boards and map. Maps are also easily availbale in Matheran and can be used to plan your point seeing. Given below are few points which shouldn't miss

Matheran is situated in the Matheran range of sahyadris at a height of 2516 feet. To reach Matheran one has to first reach Neral. Neral is well connected to Mumbai by rail and road. From Neral Matheran can be reached by a narrow gauge railway or by taxies. Railway function normally in summer and winter sseason but there is only one train to Matheran in winter.

The nearest airport is Bombay (Mumbai), around , 100 kms/65 Mile. Neral 21 kms. away, is where you transfer to the toy train. Mumbai is 108 kms. away by road, via Karjat and Neral. Pune is 120 kms. away. Taxis are available from Neral to Dastoori car park. No vehicles are allowed inside Matheran and ponies are the favoured means of transport. Don’t miss the station, used by the train four times a day. It boasts a tiny steam engine mounted, with great pride, on a pedestal. It served the people of Matheran for 77 chuffing years.

5.       Panchquani

The hills of Panchgani is about sixteen km from another popular hill station of Maharashtra namely, Mahabaleshwar. Situated in the Western Ghats Panchgani is close to important cities like Mumbai and Pune.

In Panchgani there are so many old British buildings and Parsi houses though the most famous are the educational institutes. There are as many as twenty boarding schools in Panchgani.

Road & Rail: Pune is a popular railway station for tourists to Panchgani at a distance of 98 km from Panchgani. Though the railway station nearest to happens to be at Wathar. Panchgani is well linked with Mumbai and Pune through road.

 

6.       Panhan

The history of Panhala is also the history of Marathas. Situated at a magnificent height of 3177 feet above sea level, Panhala commands a panoramic and awesome view of the valley. There are innumerable places of interest , each with its share of haunting anecdotes. Sajja Kothi, where Sambhaji was imprisoned. By Air: The airport closest to Panhala is the airport at Kolhapur airport at a distance of 35 km from Panhala. Panhala is 416 km from Mumbai and about 200 km from Pune.

Road & Rail: State Transport buses ply between Kolhapur and Panhala every 2 hours during the day. The Kolhapur railway station is only 26 km from Panhala.

 

7.       Saputara

Saputara, literally the ‘abode of serpents’, is Saputara best known hill resort ,at the height of 875 metres, saputara offers a pleasant climate and panoramic view of lush green Dang forest. The hill station is small enough to be entirely covered by foot. perched on a plateau in the Dangs forest area in the Sahyadri range of mountains, offering breathtaking views of the sunrise and sunset. The town has an image of a serpent on the banks of the river Sarpganga which is worshipped by adivasis or tribals.

Saputara is 420 kms from Ahmedabad, 589 kms from Bhavnoagar, 603 kms from Rajkot , 172 kms from Surat, 80 kms from Nasik, 185 kms from Mumbai.

North India Hill Stations:-

1.       Almora

Almora is a town in the shape of a horse shoe. It is on a 5 km long mountain range. It has its own historical, cultural and political importance. Once upon a time, it was the capital of Kumau. It was set up by King Balo Kalyan Chand in 1563.The descendents from the Kyutar dynasty and the Chand dynasty ruled here in the old times. The forts, other historical monuments, courts and governmental offices are still present today. The two rivers, Kaushik (Koshi) and Shalmali (Suyal) flow near the town. The snow capped peaks of the Himalayas look like a long train of ice and snow from here.

By Road: Almora is well connected with all-important cities of India by road.

By Air: The nearest airport is a Pant Nagar (Nainital). During the summer regular flights are operational.

By Rail: The nearest raiway station near Almora is Kathgodam.

2.       Bhimtal

Bhim Tal has an island, to the north-east side, which is an exquisite gem in the middle of the lake. It is situated within the range of temple bells, which have been chiming for the last 300 years in the 17th century edifice, beneath the shadow of the towering mountain rushing precipitously down to the emerald green lake. The island is only 91.4 metres from the shore.

Bhimtal, situated at a distance of 22kms from Nainital, is named after one of the Pandav brothers called Bhim. The largest lake in the district of Nainital, Bhim Tal is 1701 metres by 265 metres, 265 metres longer than Naini Lake. The lake known for its magnificent majesty is situated at an altitude of 1371.6 metres above sea level.

3.       Badrinath

The holy Dhama temple of Badrinath, is in the state of Uttaranchal of the Himalaya mountains. The temple's elevation is 10,248 feet (3050 metres).Badrinath Temple is the abode of Lord Vishnu. It is situated at an altitude of 3130 m at the banks of Alaknanda. In the backdrop, is the Neelkanth mountain peak situated between the twin peaks of Nar and Narayan. The name is derived from wild berries called Badri. Adi Shankarcharya established the idol of Vishnu in the temple. Near the temple is a hot water sulphur spring, Tapt Kund.

Situated on the river bank of the river Alakananda Badrinath is sandwiched within the two mountain ranges of Nar and Narayan, with the Neelkanth peak on the background. This gorgeous and rare beautiful sight is itself an enchantment for tourists and is called the "Garhwal Queen." The nearest cities are Rishikesh (300 km), Mussoorie and Dehradun. The night temperatures falls to as low as 10.

5.       Chail

Chail hill station of Himachal Pradesh acts as a honeymooner’s paradise. Chail lies at a height of 2,250 metres above the sea level. Bhupinder Singh, Maharaja of Patiala, when was facing an exiled from Shimla, he decided to create his own summer capital, which was Chail.

 Nature is at her exuberant best and words like pollution and deforestation is no where in mind of the citizens of Chail.The unmatched natural greenary with soundless calm beauty adds to the immortal memories of the tourists.

Chail was the summer capital of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala. In 1891, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala incurred the wrath of Lord Kitchener and was send in exile. He was banned to enter into the summer capital of the British Raj, Shimla. Thus, to avenge the dishonour Maharaja Bhupinder Singh decided to build a better summer capital than Shimla. The little village of Chail was perfect. It lay surrounded by magnificent deodar forests, Shimla was in direct vision and most important, the hill of Chail at 2226 m was somewhat higher than British-controlled Shimla. The architecturally magnificient palace of Maharaja is now used as a tourist hotel.

Chail is about 45 km from Shimla and around 95 km from Kalka. It is 390 km from the Indian capital (Delhi). From Kandaghat, it is an about 90 mins journey by road to Chail. To reach Kandaghat one has to take Kalka Shimla rail route. Due to the gorgious valley forest beauty the best enjoyable travel should be in a toy train. It takes five hours from Kalka to get to Kandaghat.Thickly forested tracks, hairpin bends and long tunnels add to the unforgetable memories of the tourists.

By air: The nearest airports are at Chandigarh (120 km), and Simla (63 km).
By road: From Simla via Kufri the distance is 45 km and via Kandaghat the distance is 61 km. Kalka is 86 km away. Regular buses for Chail leave from Simla, Chandigarh, and Delhi.

6.       Chikaldhara Hills

Chikhaldara is located in Amaravati district of Vidarbha region. The only hill station in the Vidarbha region offers you an abundance of wildlife, viewpoints, lakes and waterfalls. It is named after "Keechaka". This is the place where Bheema killed villainous Keechaka and threw him into the valley. It thus came to be known as "Keechakadara" - "Chikhaldara" is its corruption.

Chikhaldara is the sole hill resort in the Vidarbha region, situated at an altitude of 1,118 m and has the added distinction of being the only coffee-growing area in Maharashtra. Chikhaldara is full of deep valleys, and these valleys are full of velvet mist and majestic trees. All this makes it a very popular summer retreat. With abundance of natural scenery, exciting wildlife, breathtaking waterfalls and a placid lake, the beauty of Chikhaldara is overwhelming. The climate is always breezy and walking on the clouds often becomes a reality.

7.       Dalhousie

Dalhousie is the gateway to ancient Chamba Hill State.Dalhousie is in Chamba District of the Himachel Pradesh.The hill station of Dalhousie is full of charm and holds lingering echoes It covers an area of about 14 sq. km and is built on five hills - Kathlog, Potreyn, Tehra, Bakrota and Balun.

  
Dalhousie has charming architecture, including beautiful churches. Its location presents panoramic views of the plains - and like a long silverline, the river Ravi twists and turns below Dalhousie.Dalhousie is built by the British as per their own style as they wanted to establish a sanatorium for Europeans on the outer slopes of the Dhauladhar range. The then Maharaja of Chamba was offered handsome amout for this place.The amout Rs 2300 was decided to be paid as a compensation to the Chamba state for the transfer of this place and its nearby places like Bakrota,Tehra,Kathlog etc... to the Government of India.Sir Donald McLeod recommended the British to name, the new sanatorium as Dalhousie, after Lord Dalhousie, the first British Governor General of India in the year 1854. Thus, this beautiful hill station came into being covering an area of 14 sq kms.

8.       Dhanaulti

Unspoilt, unexplored and in stark contrast to the urban jungle that Mussoorie has become, Dhanolti is as close to nature as can be. Rows of Deodars, vast green meadows and a gentle cool breeze greets you about 30 km from Mussoorie beyond Landour. It can be a day trip or better still overnite sojourn at this beautiful country side. Treks, pony rides along fruit orchards and water streams appearing from nowhere can keep you busy as there is no mall for shopping or videogames. Hotels are few but have all the facilities including hot water and cable TV for those who care. Dhanaullti also provides excellent  views of the snow capped Himalayan ranges.You can go directly to Dhanulti by taking a right turn about 8 km before reaching Mussoorie and then doing another 30 km or so on a 'not so bad' road.

9.       Dharamsala

The great rock wall of Dhaula Dhar where wander those legendary shephardesses, the Gaddi maidens, immediately above Dharamsala rises one of the main spurs of the Himalayas, the dark, pine-covered mountain-side reaching out towards the upper peaks that soar into the regions of eternal snow. Dharamsala's altitude varies between 1,250 metres (4,400 ft) and 2,000 metres (6,560 ft).

  
The snow line, here, is perhaps more easily accessible than at any other hill resort and it is quite possible to trek upto it after an early morning's start, the glittering rays of the sun fall upon the glossy snow and cast their reflections back in the valley in all the seven colours of the rainbow, beckowning people on. The scene shifts as one approaches Dharamsala, the plains below wear a veil of blue, while the Dhaula Dhar, spur on which Dharamsala stands rises dark and pine covered. Divided into upper and lower towns with a difference of some metres (1,500 ft) between them against a background of snow-capped mountains, forests of giant conifers meet carefully cultivated tea gardens at the beautiful resort of Dharamsala which stands on the spur of the Dhauladhar range.

Dharamsala can be approached by air from Delhi and the nearest Airport is at Gaggla, just 13-km away from the town.
By Rail
Pathankot is 85-km and is the nearest railhead for Dharamsala. Trains from all over the country make a stop over at Pathankot and from here it is a three-hour journey to Dharamsala.
By Road
From Manali too bus services are available to this place. One can drive from Delhi via Chandigarh, Kiratpur, Bilaspur and it's an 8-hours journey. From Delhi and Shimla, luxury buses ply to Dharamsala.

 

10.   Gongotri

It is the man's requirement to worship the Gods or tos fulfill his desire for adventure, Gangotri is an ideal location. Gangotri, the origin of the sacred river Ganges, attracts tourists in huge numbers every season. To discover the daunting rivers and attempts to reveal the mysteries of the natural world are rare sights here. Along with the thrill of exploring nature, what one experiences here is the aura that India is famous for.

Located in the hills, Gangotri is at an altitude of 3048 meters above sea level. Gangotri is situated in the northern part of the state of Uttarakhand and is very near the Indo-Tibetan border. It is approximately 300 km from Dehradun, 250 km from Rishikesh and 105 km from Uttarkashi. The summers are cool and winters are very cold, with rains in the months of May and June. For the tourists, the gates of the temple are open only in the months of May to November.

 

11.   Gulmarg

Gulmarg legendary beauty, prime location and proximity to Srinagar naturally make it one of the premier hill resorts in the country. Originally called ‘Gaurimarg’ by shepherds, its present name was given in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah, who was inspired by the sight of its grassy slopes emblazoned with wild flowers. Gulmarg was a favourite haunt of Emperor Jehangir who once collected 21 different varieties of flowers from here. Today Gulmarg is not merely a mountain resort of exceptional beauty it also has the highest green golf course in the world, at an altitude of 2,650 m, and is the country's premier ski resort in the winter.

Gulmarg is 56 kms from Srinagar. J&K SRTC operates regular deluxe and ordinary bus services from Srinagar. In winter, the buses operate up to Tangmarg (11 kms from Gulmarg), the remaining distance being covered with smaller vehicles. Tourist taxis also operate between Srinagar and Gulmarg.v

 

12.   Kangra

This ancient town of Kangra lies overlooking the gushing torrents of the Banganga River, a tributary of the Beas rising from the southern slopes of the milky Dhauladhars. But saying simply that Kangra is an ancient town is not enough; it has the distinction of being the site of the oldest recorded war in human history. It even finds a mention in Alexander’s (around 326 BC) war records. The great Indian epic Mahabharata cites Kangra as Trigarta. Today Kangra is also known as Bhawan or Nagarkot. Bhawan because of the Bajreshwari Devi Temple, and Nagarkot because of the fort Nagarkot.

Kangra is located in the western part of the state of Himachal Pradesh, in the northern region of India. It is 18 km south of Dharamsala.

HOW TO REACH
  
Kangra does not have an airport. It has two railway stations: Kangra station, which is 3 km south of the town, and the Kangra Mandir station, 3 km east of the town. Indian Railways has introduced the Kangra Queen between Pathankot and Palampur. This luxury train running on narrow gauge covers a distance of 128 km in 4½ hours with two halts. Jawalamukhi and Kangra. The entire route provides panoramic view of the snow-capped Dhauladhar range. The Kangra bus stand is located north of the Bazaar, along the Dharamsala Road. Bus service from Kangra to Dharamsala (45 minutes) and Palampur is frequent.v

13.   Kasauli

Kasauli situated at a height of 1927mt., from sea level, is a small town with a strong Colonial influence. Kasauli provide a charming view of Chandigarh, Shimla and the himalayas covered with snow. This place is not so popular with the tourists, It's main attraction lies in it's overall cleanliness, and it's accessibility. Only 15 km from Dharampur, 37 km from Kalka and 65 km from Chandigarh. The narrow winding roads meander their way up and down the hill side and offer some magnificent sights.

14.   Kausani

There are very few places in the Himalayas which can compare with the beauty of Kaushani.As the entire Kumaon Hills have been known for their idyllic beauty with the huge mountains silhouetted against the sky.Kausani was originally called Valna. Kausani offers the magic of the deep pine forests and the majestic mountains. Kausani the birthplace of the famed poet Sumitra Nandan Pant is often referred to as the 'Switzerland of India. Situated among mountains and trees, the peaks Trishul and Nanda Devi are clearly visible from here. In 1929, Mahatma Gandhi spent 12 days here and brought his thoughts out in his book called Anasakti Yoga. The place where he stayed is called the Anasakti Ashram. This Ashram was earlier the guest house in a tea estate.

  
Kausani is ideal to visit with the family. Because of its beauty, tourists come here all through the year. From morning to evening, from valleys to peaks, thousands of different colours can be seen here.

15.   Khajjiar

Khajjiar, located at an altitude of 1960 m, is often called the Switzerland of India, with its rolling meadows, majestic deodars, bubbly streams, and the sheer opulence of its natural beauty. The snow - line appears above its lush woods, and at the very centre of this divine glade, is a lake fed by countless streams that criss - cross the area.

Khajjiar's is located between Dalhousie and Chamba,It is a major landmark is a 12th century, golden - domed temple dedicated to Khajjinag, which houses huge, lifesize wooden images of the 5 Pandava brothers.

Khajjiar is located in the northwestern part of the state of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is perched at an altitude of 1951 m above sea level. Khajjiar is 22 km from Dalhousie and 24 km from Chamba.

 

16.   Kuffri

The Hill Station Kufri is just 16 kms from Shimla, at the height of 2,633 mts, famous for its trekking and hiking trails. It is also known for nature parks and picnic spots. It also has a Potato Research Station. It is famous for winter sports. This place is also full of lush green hills. The region around Shimla including Kufri was once a part of the Kingdom of Nepal.

This region remained obscure from the rest of the world until the British discovered it in 1819. The British made Shimla their summer capital in 1864 and it remained so until 1939. As Shimla gained importance, Kufri also began to be recognized as an important place to visit. An annual winter sports festival is organized every year in the month of February in Kufri, when skiing enthusiasts and adventure seekers participate in this festival. There are plans to suspend tourist operations.It is famous for it's ski slopes, and panoramic views where deep valleys and forests rise towards the lofty Himalayas. Through thick cedar woods one can walk upto the Mahasu Peak, or visit the little zoo. At Kufri, National Snow Statue Competition is held in the month of January. From Kufri, a fascinating drive leads on to Chail. 6 kms from Kufri, along the Hindustan-Tibet road, is Fagu. It presents breathtaking scenery.

 

17.   Kullu

The most charming and beautiful Kullu valley spreads out its charm on either side of river Beas.Kullu was once known as Kulanthpitha, which means the end of the habitable world. Beyond rose the forbidding heights of the Greater Himalayas, and by the banks of the shining river Beas, lay the fabled 'Silver Valley'. The valley runs north to south of Beas river and is 80 kms. long and about 2kms wide.

 This town is famous for its temples and the annual Dussehra festival, both of which attract thousands of tourists.the town of Kullu has long been a centre of faith. In the 17th century, Raja Jagat Singh installed here an idol of Lord Raghunathji, which he brought from Ayodhya. As a mark of his penance, he placed the idol on his throne and it became the presiding deity of the valley.

Kullu is located in the central part of the state of Himachal Pradesh ,India. It is located at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level at the confluence of Beas and Sarvari rivers. It is 240 km north of Shimla.

 

18.   Ladakh

Ladakh is a part of Jammu and Kashmir State in north of The Prayer wheel India consisting of two districts Leh and Kargil. Leh with an area of 45110 Sq Kms. makes it largest district in the country in terms of area. It lies between 32 to 36 degree North latitude and 75 degree to 80 degree East longitude. The district is bounded by Pakistan occupied Kashmir in the West and China in the north and eastern part and Lahul Spiti of Himachal Pardesh in South East. Ladakh situated distance of 434 Kms. from Srinagar and 474 Kms from Manali. Leh district comprises of Leh town and 112 inhabited villages and one un-inhabited village. 19.   Monali

Manali is an important hill station of northern India and is the destination of thousands of tourists every year.Manali derived its name from Manavalaya meaning the abode of Manu or "Home of Manu" and here, the temples are treated as pilgrimages. Its cool atmosphere provides a perfect haven for the ones afflicted by the hot Indian summers. Manali is also famous for adventure sports like skiing, hiking, mountaineering, para gliding, rafting, trekking, kayaking, and mountain biking.

Manali is situated in the central parts of Himachal Pradesh, Manali is 32 km from Kullu valley, 280 km north of the state capital Shimla and 108 km from Mandi. Manali is located at an altitude of 2050 meters above sea level and is spread along the banks of the river Beas.

20.   Mount Abu

Mount Abu is a picturesque hill-station which green oasis in the barren desertscape thats Rajasthan. Situated at the southern tip of the Aravali range the hill retreat owes its cool climate to its rich flora covering the entire hillside that includes coniferous trees and flowering shrubs. The road leading to Mount Abu is a curved one characterized by arid region dotted with huge rocks in weird shapes and high velocity winds. This is also the highest point between the Nilgiris in the south and the Himalayan range up north.

 The only hill station in Rajasthan, Mount Abu is more than just a summer retreat. Its stunning array of exquisite Dilwara Jain Temples, dating back 11th- 13th centuries, make it a popular pilgrimage centre. ‘Abu’ according to a legend.stands for the son of Himalayan, deriving its name from Arbuada,the powerful serpent who rescued Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva, from a chasm.

By Rail: There are direct trains to Abu Road Station (27 km away from Mount Abu) from Delhi, Jodhpur and Agra. A fast train takes four hours between Ahmedabad in Gujarat and Abu Road.
By Road: Regular buses connect Abu Road to Mount Abu. The journey takes about an hour. Taxis and jeeps are also available to take you to Mount Abu. Direct buses also connect Mount Abu with Udaipur and Ahmedabad.

21.   Mukteswar

Mukteshwar is situated in Uttarakhand which is 330 kms. from New Delhi, Mukteshwar itself was 'put on the map' by the establishment of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute in 1898, which owns much of the land around the little town, including acres of dense virgin forest, home to langur and rhesus monkeys, deer, a host of bird species and where - if you're lucky, and patient enough - you may even catch a glimpse of a mountain leopard, Himalayan black bear or wild boar.

22.   Mussoorie

Mussoorie, Popularly known as the Queen of Hills, this charming hill station, 34 kms from Dehradun is situated at an altitude of 2003 mts in the Garhwal hills. above sea-level. Mussoorie is one the beautiful hill stations in India and the most frequently visited. It provides excellent respite to people who want relief from the hot sultry conditions of the plains, especially since it is close enough to the capital to make just weekend trip. Also, major Hindu pilgrimage sites like Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Haridwar, Rishikesh are not far from this place.

In 1820, Captain Young of the British army was influenced by the beauty of this place and made it his residence. The name, Mussoorie is derived from plants of 'Mussoorie' which were found in abundance here. After its discovery, this hill station gradually developed as a centre of education, business, tourism and beauty.

 

23.   Nainital

Nainital , Uttaranchal is famous not just for its green hills or many lakes. It is also famous for it's many legends and stories. Hundreds of ancient temples and peaks with astounding views of the mountains in the background add to Nainital's magical appeal.The history of this dainty town sails over the surface of the Naini Lake, where oarsmen narrate the stories of the rishis who brought the waters of the sacred Mansarovar River to formSuffocating at times with thousands of tourists, Nainital is also home to Sherwood, one of India's most prestigious schools.

Nainital is 34 Km from Kathgodam, the gateway of Kumaon and the terminus of North Eastern Railway. It is 304 km from Delhi, capital of India, and 388 km from Lucknow the State capital. According to the District Gazetteer Nainital is situated at 29 degree 24' north latitude and 79 degree 28' east longitude, in a valley of the Gagar range running east and west, which is bounded on the north by the peak of China, which rises to a height of 8.568 feet, continued by the Alma peak (presently known as Snow-View) and the Sher-Ka-Danda to the eastern extremity, where the ridge descends almost to the level of the lake. On the west the rugged hill of Deopatha rises to a height of 7,987 feet, and on the south Ayarpatha attains an elevation of 7,461 feet diminishing gradually towards the east.

24.   Pachmarchi

Madhya Pradesh's serene hill station, which happens to be its only one, stands at an altitude of 1067 metres. It is a large plateau, ringed by the lofty hills of the Satpura range. The landscape is characterised by rugged hills, forests and deep ravines. Known as the verdant jewel of the hills, the all - pervading greenery of the region is what strikes the observer. Various hues of green greet the eye - tranquil emerald pools, the green shades that embrace the hills, and the thick, impenetrable forest cover that dominates the region.One of its main attractions, is the splendid view it offers at dusk, when the red sandstone scarp takes on the colour of the sky, in various shades of purple and violet, as the glorious sun sets on Pachmarhi.

By Air: The nearest airport is Bhopal (195 km), which is connected by regular flights to Delhi, Gwalior, Indore and Bombay.

By Rail: Pipariya (47 km), on the Bombay–Howrah mainline via Allahabad, is the most convenient railhead. From Pipariya, there are frequent buses for Bhopal.

By Road: Pachmarhi is connected by regular bus services to Bhopal, Hoshangabad, Nagpur, Pipariya and Chindwara. M.P. Tourism as well private operators ply buses from Pachmarhi to the places listed above. Taxis can also be hired for this journey.

 

25.   Pahalgam

Ninety five km east of Srinagar at an altitude of 2,130 metres, Pahalgam is unspoiled by the ravages of progress. Away from the grind of daily life, Pahalgam is situated among the soaring mountains, glistening glaciers, gushing silvery streams of ice water and dense pine and cedar forests with soft whistling winds and revitalising air.

 Pahalgam is an ideal place for an adventure sports enthusiast. It offers wonderful treks, skiing, mountaineering and camping sites.

Pahalgam is located in the western part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is located at an altitude of 2130 m above sea level amidst the great Himalayan range. It is positioned beside the Liddar River, in the Liddar valley. Pahalgam is 95 km east of Srinagar. The weather in Pahalgam is alpine. Summers (April-June) are mild while winters (November-February) are cold. It experiences rains between July and September. It experiences heavy snowfall from December to February.

 

26.   Patnitop

Patnitop is One of the beautiful hill station Udhampur district Jammu and Kashmir.  It is located in the Shiwalik belt of the Himalayas, The River Chenab flows in close proximity to this location.
Patan Da Talab meaning "Pond of the Princess". In olden times a pond existed in the meadows and the kings princess often used to have her bath there. Part of the pond still exists near the youth hostel.The Britishers probably couldnt get the name correctly in their revenue records, and over the years it changed from "Patan Da Talab" to Patnitop.
 Patnitop is 112 Kms. 05 hrs. drive from Jammu, Patnitop offers beautiful picnic spots, peaceful walks and breathtaking views of the of the Chenab basin. In winter, there is an ambitious plan of Patnitop Development Authority to develop Patnitop, Kud, Sud-Mahadev, Mantalai circuit. The construction work of Mall Road at Kud is to be taken up in the near future. Trekking route from Kud to Patnitop-Sanasar has already been completed. The complete tourist circuit covers Jammu-Katra - Vaishno Devi ji, Kud-Sanasar, Patnitop-Gourikund, Sudmahadev, Mantali, extending upto Latti-Dhuna.

27.   Pithoragarg

Pithoragarh is in the inner Himalayas at a height of 1,851 meters in a spectacular valley situated in the northern state of Uttaranchal, Before February 1,1960 Pithoragarh was a part of district of Almora and became a separate district in same year.the headqurter of district Pithoragarh is the city Pithoragarh itself.head offices of all Govt. departments are situated in the city.District Pithoragarh has good civic facilities .

28.   Ranikhet

RANIKHET, as hill station, is idyllic in its charm, and draws holiday-makers almost all the year round with its salubrious climate and balmy breeze. Against the backdrop of snow-capped Himalayan peaks, Ranikhet means “Queen’s Field”.

Ranikhet hills offers the tourists a panoramic view of the mighty Himalayan peaks. The environs of Ranikhet are sylvan, peaceful and attractive. Ranikhet is a cantonment town and is known for its ancient temples.

An unusual name, a quaint legend and the sheer beauty of its envions make this Kumaon hill station a wonderful holiday resort

Ranikhet is situated in the northern part of the state of Uttaranchal, in the northern region of India. It is situated in the Kumaon hills and is located on an altitude of 1824 m above sea level. Ranikhet is 59 km from Nainital and 50 km from Almora. The weather in Ranikhet is alpine. Summers (April-June) are mild and winters are cold (November-February). 29.   Renuka

The enchanting Renuka Lake, in Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh, at an altitude of 672 m above sea level Renuka is a sacred place that attracts tourists and pilgrims alike in Himachal Pradesh. Iis believed to be the embodiment of Renukaji, sage Jamadagini's wife and the mother of Parshurama - one of the ten `avatars' of Lord Vishnu. Acoording to a local legend, when the evil Sahasarjuna killed sage Jamadagini and attempted to abduct the latter's wife, Renuka, she threw herself into these waters. The gods brought her back to life, and consequently, this lake is considered to be her embodiment.

Shaped like a sleeping woman, the lake is the largest in the entire state. This tranquil water body is fed by underground springs, and the lush forest cover embracing it, houses many a species of flora and fauna. Apart from the haunting natural beauty of this area, Renukaji also offers boating and trekking facilities to the adventurous at heart.

30.   Shimla

Shimla, the summer capital of the British India, is situated at a height of 2,196 metres. While the British have left the echoes linger on. today, its well developed facilities, easy accessibility and many attractions make it one of India's most popular resorts. In the Himalyan lower ranges, it is surrounded by pine, cedar, oak and rhododendron forests.
Shimla is located towards the southern parts of the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Now It is the state capital and is at a distance of 343 km from Delhi, 260 km from Manali, and 119 km from Chandigarh. The temperature range is not very high and the maximum temperature rarely crosses 25°C during summers. Winters are cold due to the chilly winds from the upper Himalayas.

 

31.   Sonamarg

Welcome to a spectacular vacation in the meadow of Gold - Sonamarg. Sonamarg is one of the many famous hill resorts of Jammu and Kashmir. Sonamarg is a major gateway to Ladakh besides being a popular base for adventure sports. The spectacular valley of Sonamarg derives its name from a legend. As per the legend there is a well in the Sonamarg valley whose water can turn anything into gold. The other possible reason for the name Sonamarg could be its location on the route to Central Asia. Sonamarg is in fact wrapped in sycamore, alpine flowers, silver birch, fir and pine.

32.   Srinagar

Srinagar is the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and is the pride of the beautiful valley of Kashmir. Srinagar is famous for its lakes and the charming rows of houseboats floating on them. It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits

Srinagar is well connected by air with Delhi. There is a daily flight to Delhi via Jammu by Indian airlines (Ph. 452328, 450257). There are weekly flights operated by Indian Airlines for Leh from Srinagar. Srinagar does not have a railway station and the nearest railhead is Jammu Tawi, which is 305 km from Srinagar. However, it is well connected by road to important places like Chandigarh (630 km), Delhi (876 km), Jammu (298 km), Leh, Kargil, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam. The main bus station is at Lal Chowk, which is the city center. Travelers can use auto-rickshaws and mini-buses to move around the city.

33.   Zanskar

About 20 kms south-east of Rangdum stands the Panzila axis, across which lies Zanskar, the most isolated of all the trans-Himalayan valleys. The Penzila pass (4,401m) is a picturesque tableland surrounded by snow-covered peaks.

As the Zanskar road winds down the steep slopes of Penzi-la to the head of the Stod valley, the majestic " Drang-Drung" glacier looms into full view. A long and winding river of ice and snow, "Drang-Drung" is perhaps the largest glacier in Ladakh, outside the Siachen formation. It is from the cliff-like snout of this extensive glacier that the Stod or Doda tributary of the Zanskar River rises.

1.       Anantagiri Hills

4.       Coorg

Mudduraja, the Kodagu King had Mudduraja Keri as his capital.In the year 1681 he renamed it as Madikeri. 7.       Idduki

Idukki, with altitudes up to 2500 ft above sea level, is one of the most beautiful districts of Kerala in India, Idukki is a district whose name is derived from the Malayalam word 'Idukku' which means a narrow gauge. Flanked by the Western Ghats in the East, the district has many narrow steep-sided valleys, giving credence to the name.The High ranges and wooded valleys are girded by three rivers - Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhyar - and their tributaries. The sacred river Pamba also originates from the mountain ranges here. As a tourist destination, Idukki is incomparable - forests, wildlife sanctuaries, hill stations, spices & plantation tours, mountain treks, elephant rides and some of the most spectacular landscapes anywhere in India.

While at Idukki you may visit the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over an area of 70 sq. km close to the Arched Dam. The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary attracts tourists for its forest cover that is rich is both flora and fauna. You may spot animals like the elephant, bison, sambhar, deer besides a wide variety of snakes and birds like the jungle foul, laughing thrush etc.

En route to Munnar, Idukki lies 121 km from Kottayam in the southern part of Kerala. Getting there Kottayam is 154 km from Thiruvananthapuram and 64 km from Kochi, which are the nearest airports.

 

 

8.       Kodaikanan

9.       Kotagiri

Kodanad View Point: It is 18 kms away from Kotagiri on the easternmost ridges of the Blue Mountains and hence the name meaning Terminus Country.From this point, the country lies spread out before the eye sparkling hills row after as though bathed in the mystic silver sunshine. The enchanting valley dips down to embrace the historic gajalahatti pass glancing at the green corpeted paddy fields of Thengumarahaada and watced over from its eyrie by the habitat of Hallimoyar.While the River Moyar scurries along to join her pal Bhanvani round the corner, across the valley of Talamalai ranges of the Eastern Ghats cuddle upto Mysore Plateau, westerly strides of which again adjoin the Kodanaadu stairs in the north, over the deeptrenched Mysore Ditch.

The hill resort of Kotagiri is located in the famous Nilgiri Hills. Kotagiri is just 16 km away from Ooty.

Road & Rail: Kotagiri is well linked with the other important places in Tamil Nadu through road transport. There are regular buses to Ooty, Mettupalayam and Coonoor

10.   Munnar

One of the most popular hill stations in India, is situated at the confluence of three mountain streams - Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala.
Munnar, a quiet and restful resort at an altitude of 1524 meters 136 km off Cochin, lies snuggled in the green and serene Kannan Devan Hills.It is famous for its lush green surroundings, lakes, reservoirs, forests, and tea estates. The quiet environs of Munnar attract the traveler to relax in the lap of Mother Nature Panoramic views of low-flying clouds and mist filled valleys make it a haven with a cool bracing climate. Munnar is located in the eastern part of the state of Kerala,India.It is 130 km east of Kochi and borders the state of Tamil Nadu.

11.   Nandi Hills

The 1,478 m high Nandi Hills, Karnataka are the source of many rivers. And the forests surrounding the hills, abound with wild animals. Around the Nandi Hills are several smaller hills which can be visited on foot. Nandi Hills enjoys a moderate climate throughout the year.

The Nandi Hills or the hills of the Nandi have been named after the bull of Lord Shiva. The pleasant hill resort of Nandi Hills is also known as Nandigiri or Nandidurga amongst the locals. The Nandi Hills have attracted people since long. Nandi hills were the summer haven of Tipu Sultan as well as the British. The palace of Tipu Sultan and the Bungalows of the British stand in testimony of the same.

By Rail: The railway station nearest to the Nandi Hills is that of Chikkaballapur just 9 km away. 12.   Ooty

Nestled in the brilliant green hills of the Nilgiris, Ooty or Udhagamandalam, is one of the favourite summer retreats of people in South India.Orchards of peaches and plums, terraced tea plantations, and eucalyptus, pine and wattle lining the landscape… a typical hill station in many ways.

Founded by the British in the early part of the 19th century, Ooty is home to many Britishers who have fallen in love with this hill station where they discovered a little bit of England. "…such beautiful English rain, such delicious English mud" is how Lord Lytton-Viceroy of India from 1876-1880 described Ooty to his wife! The British influence is visible in the handrolled cigars, chocolate and cheese one enjoys here. You also have the popular derby, and 'hunt' held annually. A hill station with a landscape perpetually enveloped in mist, Ooty's beauty has a timeless appeal.

It’s situated at an altitude of 2,268 m in the Nilgiri mountain ranges of Tamil Nadu.

Coimbatore, 105 km from Ooty, is the nearest airport. Indian Airlines has flight to Coimbatore from Bangalore, Cochin and Madras.

  The Blue Mountain Express to Ooty is from Mettupalayam (47 km). Mettupalayam can be reached from Coimbatore by the Tea Garden Express.

 

13.   Peermade

Situated 915 m above sea level, Peermade is on the way to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. this pleasant hill station was once the summer retreat of the Maharajas of Travancore.Peermade is indeed a cool hill resort in Kerala. Here you will find sprawling tea, coffee, cardamom, rubber and eucalyptus plantations side by side with natural grasslands and pine forests.

Peermade lies 85 km east of Kottayam at an altitude of 915m above sea level.The weather is cool at Peermade all through the year owing to its altitude. The cool breezes make Peermade pleasant to be visited any time of the year.

Peerumedu is 85 kms east to Kottayam (travel time: 2 hours), on the way to Thekkady. There are frequent bus services from nearby cities of Kumily and Kottayam.

14.   Wayanand

Wayanad lies at an altitude varying from 700 - 2100 metres above the sea level. The district has the highest number of tribal settlements in Kerala. The hill ranges of Vythiri taluk (taluk is a sub division of a district), through which the road from Kozhikode ascends the Wayanad plateau over the mind boggling bends and ridges, are the highest locations of Wayanad district.

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary comprises two districts of Kerala i.e. in the north; it is a part of the Cannanore district while its southern part is located in the Calicut district. The park extends from the latitude 11°15' in the North to the longitude 76°30' in the East. There is a good road network that connects the sanctuary with the other important places in Kerala.

By Air: Kozhikode or Calicut at a distance of 110 km from Kalpetta is the nearest airport. Kozhikode is connected with Mumbai, Delhi, Goa, Bangalore, Chennai and some other places in India by regular flights. There are international flights to some Middle East cities from Kozhikode.

By Train: The nearest railway station from Wynad is again Kozhikode connected to almost all the major destinations in India by regular trains.

By Road: The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation run frequent buses to the sanctuary from many places in both the states. The sanctuary is also connected to Mysore, Coorg, Bandipur, Nagarhole, and Ooty by regular buses.

15.   Yercaud

Yercaud Situated 1,515 metres high in the Shevaroy Hills, in the state of Tamil Nadu, Yercaud is quiet little hill station on the Eastern ghats is the only one of its kind in northern Tamil Nadu. While the rest of this region is generally dry, Yercaud presents a welcome contrast with its cool climate where temperature never rises above 30 º C and dip below 13 º C . It is also a less expensive place than either Udhagamandalam or Kodaikkanal the peaceful hill station of Yercaud nestles among coffee plantations and thickly forested slopes and is a good place for trekking and boating.
Some people believe that these hills were part of the ancient megalith-builders' domain which stretched from Cornwall through Brittany and Iberia to India. Clearly visitors have been streaming into Yercaud from well before recorded history

By Air: The airport at Tiruchirapalli is the nearest to Yercaud. Though the other options are the airports at Coimbatore and Bangalore.

Rail: The closest railway stations are those of the Salem junction and the Salem town.

Road: Frequent bus services and taxi services link Yercaud with Salem that is thirty km away. Other important places linked with Yercaud are Madras, Trichy, Madurai, Chennai, Bangalore and Coimbatore.

1.       Darjeeling

Air: The nearest Airport to Darjeeling is Bagdogra.It gives arround 100 km journey to Darjeeling.

Rail:Shiliguri is conected to all the major cities of india by train.From Shiliguri and New Jalpaiguri, the Toy Trains are available which gives a memorable journey to Darjeeling.

Road:Shiliguri is also well accessed by road ways and buses , minibuses jeeps run every thirty minutes or so from Siliguri to Darjeeling,Mirik,Gangtok Katmandu and other places.

 

2.       Kalimpanq

The first thing that strikes the traveler visiting Kalimpong is its quiet atmosphere. The peaceful ambience that pervades is heightened by the presence of monasteries and churches across the town.

It is situated 70km from gangtok & 180km from Darjeeling.

3.       Mirik

Mirik, the youngest hill station of India, is built around a 1.25 km long natural lake. The magical hill resort lies close to Siliguri in the West Bengal state of India. The peaceful and tranquil hill resort of Mirik boasts of several nature spots. The wild flowers, lovely lake and flourishing forests of Cryptomaria Japanica trees make Mirik appear as a tropical paradise. Mirik is surrounded by tea estates, orange orchards and cardamom plantations. There is a floating fountain in the middle of the lake and a quaint little footbridge connecting the flower garden on the eastern bank to the heavily forested ridge on the west. The lake is provided with boating facilities.

The place is only 49km from Darjeeling and 52km from Siliguri and can be reached from either place quite easily. This place is 1767 meters above the sea level and has a relatively thin population of 15,000 people. A relatively new tourist destination, Mirik came in the tourist map of Darjeeling District only in the 1970s. Mirik has all that it takes to attract tourists; it is surrounded by forests, flowers and is a very peaceful place, which attracts the tourists automatically.

By Air: The airport nearest to Mirik is in Bagdogra at a distance of 55 km

Road & Rail: The broad gauge railhead at New Jalpiaguri caters to the rail transportation to Mirik but is 60 km away from the hill resort. The excellent road network links Mirik with other important places like Bagdogra, Siliguri, Kurseong and Darjeeling

4.       Shillong

Scotland Of The East
Perched at an altitude of 1,496 m, this lesser known hill station is also called the "Scotland of the east". What exactly it has in common with Scotland maybe a matter of discussion but the majority of the population - the Khasis and the Jaintias - boats of a clan system that would any day outrival the Scottish clans!

As the car winds up from Guwahati in neighbouring Assam, 103-km away, the flat, dusty and grimy plains give way to rolling hills that rise slowly and sinuously. No abrupt, sudden assault on the senses. The charms of Shillong begin to work gradually but effectively. The road snakes up through lush green forests, seeping into the senses like heady wine.

By Air : Guwahati's Borjhar Airport is the nearest international airport at a distance of 128 kilometers from Shillong.
By Rail : Shillong is connected by rail with the rest of the country through the railhead of Guwahati at a distance of 103 kilometers.

5.       Tawank

Tawang, perched at a height of over 10,000 ft, is world-renowned for its 400-year-old Buddhist Monastery, one of the biggest in India.
The Monastery was founded by the monk Mera Lama, a contemporary of the fifth Dalai Lama. The sixth Dalai Lama was born here. The Tawang Monastery has an interesting collection of Thangkas (Tibetan painting on cloth) and a large gilded statue of Sakyamuni (the historical Buddha) in the prayer hall. The Tawang Monastery, also known as the 'Galden Namgyal Lhatse', is beautifully situated on a spur about 2 km from the heart of the town. Before the establishment of the Monastery, Tawang was a centre of Tantric religion.

West India Hill Stations:-

1.       Khandala

Khandala, set at a height of 625 mt, located on the western slopes of the Sahyadri mountain range is a hill station in Maharashtra. Fascinating panoramic beauty adorns this place.Although it is comparatively small as compare to lonavala but it is equally blessed with natural beauty and bounty. Deep valley on one side and high hills on the other side divide Khandala and Lonavala. Luckily, modern industrialisation has not adversely affected Khandala. Whenever a tourist visits Lonavala he also wishes to visit Khandala. While travelling on Mumbai Bangalore National Highway, one has to cross the arduous Khopoli - Khandala Ghat. This is the famous Borghat. In a short distance of 8 Kms one has to climb a height of 369 meters. This is a difficult Ghat to climb. But once you reach here, you feel that this climb has been worth the trouble. Khandala is One place where you will fall in love at First Site. Lonavala and Khandala are full of tourist practically for the whole year. Main reasons for this is the fact that it is very close to Mumbai.

Khandala is located in the western part of the state of Maharashtra,India. It is set amongst the hills and valleys of the Sahyadri mountain range. It is situated 101 km southeast of Mumbai and 69 km from Pune. It is 5 km from Lonavala.

Lonavala is a Hill station in Maharashtra. Also known as the jewel of the Sahyadri Mountains. It also serves as a starting point for tourists interested in visiting the famous, ancient Buddhist rock cut caves of Bhaja and Karla, which are located near this hill station.

Lonavala is located in the western part of the state of Maharashtra, in India. It is situated 106 km southeast of Mumbai at an altitude of 625 m above sea level.

Air: The nearest airport from Lonalvala is Pune, which is 64 km from Lonavala.

Train: Lonavala is on the main railway line between Mumbai and Pune , all express trains plying between the two cities stop here.

Road:The bus service between Lonavala and Pune is good (2 hours). However, the ride is rough and it takes 4 hours to reach Mumbai from Lonavala. Buses shuttle between Lonavala and Khandala (5 km from Lonavala; 15 minutes trip).

 

3.       Mahabaleswar

The highest hill station in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra , Mahabaleshwar is situated at 1372 meters around Lake Venna, Mahabaleshwar is Sanskrit for God of Great Power. It was summer capital of Governor of the old Bombay Presidency.Covering 10 sq km. There are 30 valley viewpoints with panoramic vistas scattered around the hill station and their access roads make for shady, pleasant walks and treks. The area has strong historical connections with Shivaji, the heroic Maratha warrior king.

The Britishers built various mansions, cottages and bungalows around the town, lending it a charming, sophistication. The place is popular with tourists, especially from Mumbai and Pune, wanting to take a break from the rush of rat race. the hill-station is very crowded during vacations like christmas & Diwali and in summers.

By Air: Pune is the nearest airport both for Mahabaleshwar (120 km and Panchgani (98 km)

By Rail: For Mahabaleshwar, the nearest railhead is Wathar (62 km) but Pune (120 km) is the convenient railhead.

For Panchgani, the nearest railhead is Wathar (45 km). Mumbai-Wathar via Pune (312 km). Pune-Wathar (120 km)

By Road: From Mumbai via Pune, Mahabaleshwar is 290 km and via Mahad it is 247 km. The State Transport buses ply from Mumbai and Pune to Mahabaleshwar. MTDC operates daily bus services except during the monsoon, between Mumbai-Mahabaleshwar-Mumbai. Also sightseeing tours for Mahabaleshwar and Mahabaleshwar-Pratapgad Fort.

  From Mumbai via Pune, Panchgani is 270 km and via Mahad 266 km, from Pune 98 kilometers and from Mahabaleshwar 19 km. The State Road Transport buses ply from Satara, Pune, Wai, Mahabaleshwar and Mahad. MTDC runs a regular bus service between Mumbai and Panchgani.

 

4.       Matheran

Matheran has 38 points at which can get a glimpse of nature's beauty. However to cover most of these points requires atleat one night stay in Matheran. Point seeing in Matheran is quiet easy due to the presence of sign boards and map. Maps are also easily availbale in Matheran and can be used to plan your point seeing. Given below are few points which shouldn't miss

Matheran is situated in the Matheran range of sahyadris at a height of 2516 feet. To reach Matheran one has to first reach Neral. Neral is well connected to Mumbai by rail and road. From Neral Matheran can be reached by a narrow gauge railway or by taxies. Railway function normally in summer and winter sseason but there is only one train to Matheran in winter.

The nearest airport is Bombay (Mumbai), around , 100 kms/65 Mile. Neral 21 kms. away, is where you transfer to the toy train. Mumbai is 108 kms. away by road, via Karjat and Neral. Pune is 120 kms. away. Taxis are available from Neral to Dastoori car park. No vehicles are allowed inside Matheran and ponies are the favoured means of transport. Don’t miss the station, used by the train four times a day. It boasts a tiny steam engine mounted, with great pride, on a pedestal. It served the people of Matheran for 77 chuffing years.

5.       Panchquani

The hills of Panchgani is about sixteen km from another popular hill station of Maharashtra namely, Mahabaleshwar. Situated in the Western Ghats Panchgani is close to important cities like Mumbai and Pune.

Saputara, literally the ‘abode of serpents’, is Saputara best known hill resort ,at the height of 875 metres, saputara offers a pleasant climate and panoramic view of lush green Dang forest.
